Room Divider Wall in Cutler Bay, FL: Turning a Family Room Corner into a Private Home Office

A homeowner in Cutler Bay had a section of her family room that she wanted to turn into a home office. She needed real privacy, with a door she could close and lock, so no one walks in while she works. Until then the space was split with a curtain. We built the wall from scratch, from the first stud to the final coat of paint.

What we did

  1. Framing. Built the wall frame with studs and a door opening, checking level and plumb as we went.
  2. Drywall. Hung the drywall panels on the frame and fit them around the door opening.
  3. Taping and mudding. Covered the seams and screw heads with joint compound, then sanded the surface smooth.
  4. Door. Installed the door and trim in the opening so the room can be closed off.
  5. Paint. Primed, then painted the new wall and the door so everything blends with the rest of the room.

Finishing and paint

Drywall finishing takes patience. Each coat of compound has to dry before sanding, and the room is covered and protected the whole time to keep dust under control. Once the wall was smooth, we primed it and painted it, including the door and frame.

The result

The curtain is gone and the family room now has a solid wall with a door. The paint matches the existing walls, and the homeowner has a private space for her office.
